The Event kicks-off with a screening of the Golden Globe Award-winning lm adaptation of August Wilson's play Fences, starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis.

August Wilson lived in the Twin Cities for twelve years and worked closely with the Penumbra Theater. The screenplay depicts Denzel Washington as a working-class former baseball player coming to terms with life in the 1950s.

Refreshments will be served.

The event is sponsored by the Department of English and Philosophy, the Center for Applied Ethics, and the Office of the Chancellor.

Lou Bellamy’s talk will celebrate the Penumbra Theatre’s association with playwright August Wilson, whose 12-year collaboration with Bellamy underscores the recent lm adaptation of Wilson’s play Fences by actor/director Denzel Washington.

Bellamy will discuss August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, and its social perspectives and relevance today within the cultural context of African American theater and literature. Bellamy will also discuss the issues of directing and producing the play for the stage, and the adaptation of the play to the screen.

This event is free and open to the public.
