Multicultural Student Services & Stoutward Bound

Resources for first-year families and friends
December 11, 2024

Welcome to UW-Stout! As the family member, support person or friend of an incoming first-year student, we know you may have many questions. We want to help aid you and your student as they transition to Stout.

Our Multicultural Student Services (MSS) provides a range of programs and services to support all students with a focus on affirming, celebrating and honoring diverse and intersectional identities. These efforts aim to cultivate a sense of belonging, community, and meaningful connections to campus. MSS provides academic, career, cultural, leadership and personal support and development, as well as a gathering space and opportunities for students to connect, talk, study and relax.

Consider having your student participate in the MSS Stoutward Bound program.

MSS also provides a living and learning community through our Stoutward Bound (SWB) program for incoming first-year students.

Stoutward Bound offers meaningful interactions and experiences designed around academic success, campus connections and a sense of community. This high-impact program consists of a one-week early start session, first-year support, and continuous guidance throughout your student’s educational journey.

As a Stoutward Bound Scholar, your student will be a part of a supportive living and learning community that will prepare them for success and help them transition from high school to college.

It consists of a one-week early start, high-impact program, offering first-year support and continuous guidance throughout your student's educational journey. They will meet other incoming first-year students, build confidence and learn to navigate campus.

"Stoutward Bound provided a lot of peace of mind and eased most of my worries when it came to college and college life. At the time, it felt like I was jumping into higher education headfirst. Stoutward Bound helped me find my footing and get accustomed to the shift in lifestyle. This also allowed me to create solid social connections that have encouraged me to be more active in my communities!" said Evangeline Thao, 2022 cohort.

We encourage you to talk with your student about this opportunity. Learn more about the program and apply.
