The Sustainability Steering Committee and Stout Student Association have installed a bike shelter to promote the use of alternative transportation on campus.
Funding was provided by the student-approved Green Fee, a segregated fee for campus sustainability initiatives.
The shelter model was chosen for functionality, price, and aesthetics. It houses roughly 12-14 bikes from the elements and the plexiglass walls will also keep out snow in the winter.
The new addition has been inspiring other departments on campus to adopt a sustainable mindset. Plastics Engineering students are creating bike shelter designs as part of their capstone course this semester and University Housing will be installing bike lockers for South Campus next year.
Sarah Rykal, the Sustainability Coordinator, said, “We hope that green fee-funded sustainability projects like this will continue to spur more sustainability initiatives and get students and staff thinking about sustainable solutions on our campus.”
The bike shelter is just one of the new bike-friendly installations to happen this year. Check out the bike repair stations on campus!
