The concert will present music students have been studying this semester that explores the association of music with emotion, said Professor Aaron M. Durst, Symphonic Band director. The selections can be correlated with a variety of emotions, and audience members will be prompted to think about how the music evokes different emotional associations.

The selections will include a transcription of Bela Bartok’s piano work “Allegro Barbaro” and Johann Sebastian Bach’s organ composition “Prelude and Fugue in D minor.”

Original works for band will include “Spy Ring” by Richard Saucedo, “Third Suite” by Robert Jager and “Arabian Dances” by Brian Balmages. Also included will be adaptions of Leonard Bernstein’s “Slava!” and Elaine Hagenberg’s choral work “We May Rise.”

In addition, the Tower Saxophone Quartet with perform an arrangement of Johann Christian Bach’s “Sinfonia No. 3,” and the newly formed polka band will present a pair of polkas for the audience’s enjoyment.

With 75 members, the Symphonic Band brings together students from many majors and backgrounds, but all students have a love of making music with their instruments, Durst said.

Abbigail Bauer, a junior from Ellsworth, describes her experience. “Band at Stout is amazing because we support each other. When I walk across campus and see another classmate, I know I have a friend. Being in band is like having a second family. We might not know or remember each other’s name, but we will support each other.”
