Congratulations! We’re excited to welcome you to the UW-Stout community. Use the checklists below to guide your next steps—from setting up your account to registering for classes and preparing for move-in. Each checklist is organized by your start term (fall or spring) and student type (first-year or transfer).

Activate Your UW-Stout Microsoft Account

When: Immediately
Activate your account to gain access to essential campus technology, including your UW-Stout email—our official way of communicating with you. Be sure to check it regularly

Join Incoming Student CONNECT

When: After account activation 
Start meeting other new students and connect with others who share your interests. Many students join CONNECT early to start building connections and to find a roommate. After registering for classes, the app will unlock the full UW-Stout Campus App with events, organizations, and more.

How to join:

  1. Download the UW-Stout CONNECT app (Apple | Android)
  2. Select Incoming Student CONNECT
  3. Log in with your UW-Stout credentials (Guest access will not display content.)

Commit to UW-Stout

When: After account activation 
Confirm your plans to attend by accepting your admission offer.

Housing & Living on Campus

Secure your housing and prepare for move-in by following the steps below.

Complete Your Housing Reservation 🏠

When: After account activation 
You’ll receive an email from University Housing with instructions to reserve your residence hall space in the Housing Gateway. Complete the steps and sign your contract to secure your place.

Room selection times are assigned based on when your contract is completed—the earlier you finish, the better your chances of selecting your preferred space.

Prepare for Room Selection

When: Early March 
You’ll receive information to your UW-Stout email about how to prepare for room selection, including: 

  • Roommate search tools
  • Living Communities
  • Room options

Select Your Room

When: Late June / Early July 
Follow the instructions sent to your UW-Stout email to select your room and roommate in the Housing Gateway.

Schedule Your Move-In

When: Early August 
Select your move-in date and time in the Housing Gateway.

Move to Campus

When: Move-in Week

  • Fall 2026: August 22 – August 30
  • Fall 2027: August 29 – September 5

Move into your residence hall on your scheduled date and time. You can remain on campus after move-in, but most students leave and return for Week One Orientation (WOO).

Finance Your Education

File Your FAFSA đź’°

When: Starting October 1
Priority Deadline: February 15  
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) using School Code 003915 to be considered for financial aid, including grants, loans, and some scholarships. You may receive follow-up communication from Financial Aid if additional information is needed.

To be considered for need-based UW-Stout Foundation scholarships, you must submit your FAFSA by February 15.

  • Fall 2026: Submit the 2026–27 FAFSA 
  • Fall 2027: Submit the 2027-28 FAFSA (available October 1, 2026)

UW-Stout Foundation Scholarships

When: Starting Mid-October
Deadline: February 1 
Apply for additional scholarships through the UW-Stout Foundation. Sign in with your UW-Stout Microsoft Account. Your application will prefill with your student record—submit one application to be considered for all available awards.

Incoming Student Scholarships

The Admissions Office offers various scholarships, some of which require additional steps. Visit the Scholarships page to review requirements and selection criteria.

External Scholarships

Explore scholarship opportunities offered through your local community and organizations.

Minnesota Students: Apply for Tuition Reciprocity

When: Starting March 1  
Register online with the Minnesota Office of Higher Education to receive a reduced tuition rate at UW-Stout.

Prepare for Enrollment

Sign Up for First-Year Registration & Orientation (FYRO)

When: Starting early February 
Check your UW-Stout email for your FYRO invitation and sign up for your preferred date. 

Complete UW Placement Testing

When: Starting March 15
Deadline: 1 week before scheduled FYRO date 
Complete placement testing at least one week before your orientation session. Students with transfer credits for math & English may not need to test.

Request Final Official Transcripts

When: After graduation (high school) / after final grades post (college) 
Send final high school transcripts showing your graduation date and any final college or university transcripts to the Admissions Office.

Send Score Reports for Test Credit

When: As soon as your score report is available 
If you earned college credit in high school (AP, IB, dual enrollment, etc.), review how your credits may transfer to UW-Stout.

If you have military or standardized test credit (CLEP, DANTES, etc.), explore options to earn credit for prior learning.

Sign the Student Account Contract

You must complete the Student Account Contract before registering for classes. This is required for Fall and Spring enrollment but not for Winterm or Summer terms.

Attend FYRO & Register for Classes

When: June (with additional date options in July/August) 
Attend FYRO, meet with advisors, and register for your first semester of classes.

Final Steps Before Classes Begin

Apply for a Parking Permit (if applicable)

When: Starting in August 
Parking permits are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Register for your permit with Parking Services

Sign Master Promissory Notes (if applicable)

When: Before classes begin 
Required if you are taking out student loans.

View Your Tuition Bill in AccessStout

When: Starting Mid-August 
You will receive email notification to your UW-Stout email when your tuition bill is ready to view. View tuition due dates and authorize a parent or guest user on your account.

Attend Week One Orientation

When:

  • Fall 2026: August 30 – September 1
  • Fall 2027: September 5 – September 7

Meet other students and get connected on campus.

Attend Your First Day of Classes

When:

  • Fall 2026: Wednesday, September 2
  • Fall 2027: Wednesday, September 8

Prepare for Enrollment

Submit BFA Portfolio (if applicable)

Priority Deadline: March 1 
Portfolio due by midnight for all Art & Design BFA programs. Check your acceptance letter for information on how to contact the School of Art & Design for further information on submitting your portfolio and essay.

Request Final Official Transcripts

When: After final grades post 
Deadline: Last Monday in August 
Send final college/university transcripts to the Admissions Office. Military Students: Send your Joint Services Transcript or CCAF.

Send Score Reports (if applicable)
