For new students, math placement is determined by taking the UW System Math Placement Exam. On campus, this is facilitated by the Advisement Center:
Based on your test score, you will be given a placement level of 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4.
The following chart shows which courses a student can register for at a given placement level.
Level | Course |
---|---|
0 | MATH-80 Foundations for Intermediate Algebra AND concurrent enrollment in MATH-90 Intermediate Algebra |
1 | MATH-90 Intermediate Algebra |
2 | MATH-118 Concepts of Mathematics or MATH-120 College Algebra or MATH-123 Finite and Financial Mathematics or MATH-150 Calculus with Precalculus A |
3 | MATH-121 Trigonometry or MATH-122 Precalculus (or the preceding courses) |
4 | MATH-153 Calculus 1 or MATH-156 Calculus and Analytic Geometry 1 (or the preceding courses) |
Mathematics Placement Appeal Form
This form is for students who wish to appeal their mathematics placement level. Students need to complete the required fields in the form and submit it. The form will be automatically routed to the MSCS Department chair, who will review the information provided and determine if it is advisable to increase their math level (note that students can only move up one mathematics placement level). The student and their advisor will receive notification by email with the outcome. If approved, the student will work with their advisor to determine the appropriate course.
