Get ready for an immersive polytechnic adventure at UW-Stout’s STEAM (STEM + Art & Design) Summer Camps! Designed for high school students (entering grades 9-12), these camps provide a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on, applied learning in science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

Utilize real-world tools, tackle creative challenges, and collaborate on problem-solving activities in engaging lab and workshop settings. Beyond the classroom, participate in fun recreational, enrichment, and developmental activities. For the full college-life experience, choose the residential camp option, and stay in a campus dormitory, participate in the evening activities, and enjoy the included meals.

Arts & Design

3D Animation Camp (June 8 - June 12)

3D Animation Camp

Bring your imagination to life in this exciting animation camp! Using industry-standard software, you’ll start with the basics and quickly progress to creating your own animations. Learn the 12 principles of animation and collaborate with your peers to produce an animated short film. By the end of the camp, your work will be featured online for everyone to enjoy.

Storycraft Camp (June 8 - June 12)

Storycraft: Roleplaying, Worldbuilding & Storytelling Camp

Journey into the world of storytelling and imaginative play in this dynamic creative workshop. Begin with immersive roleplaying sessions where you'll bring characters to life, sketch thrilling stories, and design rich, captivating worlds. From there, expand and deepen your creations through hands-on creative writing and storytelling exercises. By the end of the workshop, you'll have crafted a collection of characters, narratives, and worlds to showcase in your own creative portfolio—a true testament to your imagination and storytelling skills!

Unspooled Cinema Camp

Whether you dream of launching a filmmaking career or simply want to explore your creativity through film, this camp equips you with the tools, techniques, and inspiration to bring your story to life. By the end of the camp, you’ll walk away with both a deeper understanding of filmmaking and a completed short film to showcase your talent!

Unspooled Film & Animation Camp (June 14 - June 21)

Unspooled Film & Animation Camp

Embark into the thrilling world of film and animation with this immersive cinematic workshop! Utilizing "tra-digital" methods and industry-standard software, you'll embark on an adventure to master the fundamentals of 2D animation and video production to tell your story. Work together in small groups to create your very own animated short film and watched it on the big screen! To top off this amazing experience, your hard work may be showcased at a vibrant film festival where everyone can celebrate the fantastic stories you've crafted.

Sewing 101 + Draping Camp (July 13 - July 17)

Sewing 101 + Draping Camp

Are you interested in fashion and design? Do you love working with fabrics? Get inspired with us during a week-long sewing and draping camp to learn the basics of proper sewing technique and draping on the 3D form. Learn about fabric selection for different types of projects, how to sew on a home sewing machine, and what it is like to create a fashion look by draping on a 3D dress form. Create your own tote bag and coordinating pencil case to take home as a memento of your fashion camp experience!

Photography Exploration Camp

Step into the exciting world of photography and unleash your creativity! Learn a variety of capture and editing techniques while working with your own device or borrowing equipment from our University Library. Through hands-on activities and expert guidance, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how to tell powerful stories through your photos. Collaborate in teams to plan, budget, and construct small-scale projects - such as outdoor benches or raised garden beds - that will be donated to a local nursing home. This camp is made possible through a partnership between UW-Stout and Junior Achievement. Scholarships are available thanks to an NSF ExLENT Grant (Award # 2347352).

3D Printing & Plastics Engineering Camp (August 3 - August 7

3D Printing & Plastics Engineering: From Concept to Creation Camp

Ever wanted to design, create, and manufacture your own 3D-printed part from start to finish? In this hands-on camp, you’ll design a 3D part, produce your own 3D printing filament, and use it to bring your creation to life. Explore material selection, product design, simulation, and plastics manufacturing using cutting-edge techniques such as injection molding, extrusion, 3D printing, and thermoforming - all in a state-of-the-art laboratory. With engaging hands-on activities, you'll gain insight into the science and engineering behind plastics while discovering exciting career opportunities in this high-demand industry, especially in the local region. This camp also offers a fantastic introduction to UW-Stout’s ABET-accredited Plastics Engineering Program - one of only two in the nation!

Engineering in Motion: Mechanics, Sensors & Design Camp

Discover the exciting world of engineering by exploring mechanics of materials, statics, and dynamics - the science behind how objects move and stay balanced. Learn how sensors and automation are used in real-world technology, from robots to smart devices. Then, design and build creative solutions through hands-on projects and fun team challenges.

From Sketch to Shelf Camp (August 10 - August 14)

From Sketch to Shelf: A Packaging Engineering & Design Camp

Explore the behind-the-scenes work of packaging engineers and graphic designers, learning how packaging influences the way we interact with products and exploring the sustainability behind disposal. Then, design your own packaging, prototype it, and conduct tests to ensure it meets industry standards.

Human Body & Mind Camp (June 8 - June 12)

Human Body & Mind Camp

Explore how the human body works through activities like viewing your own cells under a microscope, measuring lung capacity, monitoring your heartbeat with an EKG, and viewing real anatomical specimens in the cadaver lab. Then, discover the incredible connection between the human body and mind through interactive psychology activities that uncover how the brain influences emotions, memory, and behavior!

GeneScape: Molecular Ecology Camp (Two Options)

GeneScape: Making Sense of Our Natural World With Molecular Ecology Camp

Explore the exciting field of molecular ecology in this hands-on camp combining outdoor fieldwork and cutting-edge lab techniques like PCR, gel electrophoresis, and DNA sequencing. Tackle real-world challenges such as Lyme pathogen density, fish mating systems, and wildlife forensics while learning how genetics and ecology work together to solve environmental mysteries.

High school students operate various equipment and machinery to bring their imagination to life in UW-Stout's Summer STEAM Experience.

STEAM Summer Camp Highlights

  • 6 hours of hands-on instruction/lab time per weekday
  • Fun recreational, enrichment, and developmental activities
  • 10:1 camper-to-counselor ratio
  • Camp t-shirt
  • Meals: Lunch for commuter campers. All meals for residential campers.
  • Campus dormitory accommodations for residential campers

Check-In and Check-Out Times

Check-in and check-out occur at North Hall (124 10th Ave E, Menomonie, WI).

Commuter Camps

  • First Day of Camp: Check-in between 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM and out at 5:00 PM.
  • Subsequent Days: Check-in at 8:15 AM and out at 4:15 PM.

Residential Camps

  • First Day of Camp: Check-in between 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM.
  • Last Day of Camp: Check-out at 4:15 PM.
