 First Year Instructor Program

This yearlong program provides a forum for new tenure-track faculty and instructional academic staff to explore issues that are beyond the scope of the New Instructor Workshop and are characteristic of ongoing teaching responsibilities. It offers 8 or more sessions designed to provide instructors with collegial support, access to seasoned faculty and administrators, and an opportunity to ask questions and network.

Goals:

  • Explore and implement effective and inclusive teaching practices
  • Acknowledge the responsibilities and expectations of the instructor’s role and duties with the student population, the program, department, university and community culture
  • Identify resources that support instructors’ personal and professional lives.
  • Utilize strategies to effectively achieve self-identified goals related to teaching, service and research
  • Use a variety of mentor-mentee strategies to achieve self-identified goals
  • Develop a professional support network, both on and off campus

Participation Requirements:

  • Department Chair Approval
  • Attendance and monthly face-to-face sessions
  • Willingness to engage with PERTS’ Copilot: Ascend Program
