If you are a fun and caring individual who is passionate about STEAM and enjoys working with youth, consider joining us this summer! We are looking for counselors, head counselors, teaching assistants, instructors, and volunteers to help create an amazing, hands-on learning experience for campers in UW-Stout’s 2025 Junior STEAM Summer Camps (for students entering grades 4-8) and STEAM Summer Camps (for students entering grades 9-12). Camps run from the week of June 8 through the week of August 10.

Counselors (Paid Position: $600/week + room & board, $75 raise for returning counselors, 3-year cap)

Counselors are the heart of the camp experience, working closely with a small group of campers to ensure their well-being, engagement, and enjoyment.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a role model, mentor, and leader for a team of ~10 campers.
  • Supervise campers throughout the day and ensure their safety.
  • Act as the health supervisor for your group (training provided).
  • Encourage campers to fully participate in all aspects of camp.
  • Assist campers in getting to scheduled activities on time.
  • Support camp instructors during lessons and activities.
  • Plan and lead fun, interactive activities (e.g., volleyball, board games, crafts).
  • Assist Head Counselor with night duties when scheduled.
  • Attend mandatory counselor training on June 7.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Positive, energetic, and team-oriented
  • Experience working with or leading youth activities is preferred.
  • Experience in multiple camp topics (see Junior STEAM Summer Camps and STEAM Summer Camps) is preferred.

Additional Perks:

  • Housing is provided between camp sessions for counselors working multiple weeks.

Head Counselors (Paid Position: $1,000/week + room & board)

Head Counselors provide leadership and mentorship to counselors and ensure smooth day-to-day operations at camp.

Responsibilities:

  • Carry out the responsibilities of a counselor while providing additional support to and leading a team of counselors.
  • Attend mandatory training on June 7.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between counselors and the Camp Director.
  • Participate in daily staff meetings, providing input on camp improvements and camper well-being.
  • Assist in planning and implementing camp activities.
  • When scheduled, supervise and support campers during evening activities and overnight stays (see night duty expectations).

Night Duty Expectations:

  • Oversee camper dormitories in the evenings, ensuring a safe and respectful environment.
  • Enforce camp curfews and quiet hours, promoting a structured and restful environment.
  • Conduct nightly check-ins to confirm all campers are in their assigned rooms and following lights-out policies.
  • Be available on-call overnight to respond to camper needs, emergencies, or behavioral concerns.
  • Work on a rotating shift schedule with other staff to allow for adequate rest.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Classroom management or youth supervision experience
  • Strong leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills
  • Comfortable supervising campers overnight and responding to any issues that arise

Teaching Assistants (Paid Position: $300/week)

Teaching Assistants work closely with camp instructors to facilitate hands-on learning experiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist instructors with teaching and hands-on activities from 8:30 AM to 4:15 PM during the weekdays of camp.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model to campers.
  • Help supervise the campers.
  • Report behavioral or health concerns to the instructor.

Qualifications:

Instructors (Paid Position: Competitive Pay Based on Experience)

Instructors are subject-matter experts who play a vital role in delivering engaging, hands-on STEAM learning experiences for campers. They design and lead activities that inspire curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving while fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Create a dynamic, project-based learning environment that encourages exploration and innovation.
  • Adapt instruction to various learning styles and skill levels to ensure all campers are engaged.
  • Provide individualized support and mentorship to campers.
  • Manage classroom settings, ensuring a structured and positive experience.
  • Collaborate with teaching assistants, counselors, and volunteers to enhance the camp experience.
  • Maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning space.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Background in STEAM education, teaching, or relevant field experience
  • Passion for engaging youth in hands-on learning and fostering curiosity
  • Strong communication, leadership, and classroom management skills preferred

Volunteer Opportunities (Unpaid: Flexible Hours, Great for Experience & Community Service!)

Volunteers play a key role in enhancing the camp experience, whether by assisting with camp operations or sharing expertise as a guest presenter. If you're passionate about STEAM education and youth development, this is a great opportunity to contribute!

Volunteer Roles:

  • Guest Presenters: Lead a workshop, demonstration, or interactive session in a STEAM-related field.
  • Camper Engagement: Assist with hands-on activities, mentoring, and group supervision.
  • General Camp Support: Help with camp setup, activity coordination, and cleanup.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Support: Assist with administrative tasks, logistics, and event planning.
